Choosing a domain

Five tips for choosing a name.

A clear, memorable domain helps people find your business. Consider these points before you register a name.

  1. Make it easy to spell

Choose a name that is easy to say, type, and remember. Avoid confusing spellings, hyphens, and repeated letters where possible.

  2. Keep it short

Shorter names are easier to type on a phone and fit better on signs and packaging.

  3. Choose a relevant extension

Consider a familiar extension such as .com or an option that reflects your business, organization, or project.

  4. Look for lookalikes

Check that the name is not confusingly close to another business or someone else's trademark.

  5. Have an alternative ready

If your first choice is unavailable, consider another extension or a variation that is still easy to recognize.

Register or transfer

Register a new domain or transfer yours.

Register a new domain

  1. Search for your name in the billing portal.
  2. Review the available extensions and the prices shown.
  3. Enter your contact details accurately; registries require them.
  4. Complete the order. The registration is confirmed once the registry accepts it.

Transfer a domain you own

  1. Unlock the domain at your current registrar.
  2. Request the authorization (EPP) code from your current registrar.
  3. Confirm your admin contact email is current so you can approve the request.
  4. Submit the transfer in the billing portal with the code.

Registry rules can delay or block a transfer, for example shortly after a registration or contact change. Eligibility and timing vary by extension.

Understanding DNS

Connect your domain to your website.

DNS is the directory that tells browsers and mail servers where your domain lives. Once your domain is registered, you point it at your hosting by changing one of two things.

Need help with DNS? Contact Us.

Nameservers
Changing nameservers switches your domain's DNS provider. Copy any required website and email records before making the change.
A record
Points the domain or a subdomain to a server's IP address. Useful when only the website should move.
CNAME
An alias from one name to another, commonly used for the www version of your site.
MX record
Directs email for your domain. Keep these intact if mail is handled elsewhere.
TXT record
Text entries used to verify ownership or configure email authentication.
TTL and propagation
Changes can take time to spread across the internet, from minutes to a day or more.
Pair it with hosting

Your domain and hosting, working together.

A domain gives your website an address. Hosting stores the files that make it work. Choose a shared hosting plan, then connect a new domain or one you already own.

Questions

Domain FAQs.

Have another question? Contact Us.

Is the domain mine as soon as I order?

A domain is not reserved until the order is completed and the registry confirms it. Availability can change until then.

Where do I see prices?

Prices for each extension are shown in the billing portal before you submit an order. Renewal terms are shown there too.

Can I use a domain I bought elsewhere?

Yes. You can keep it where it is and point its DNS at your hosting, or transfer it through the billing portal.

Do I need to transfer my domain to use your hosting?

No. You can keep your domain with your current registrar and connect it to your hosting account by updating its nameservers or DNS records.

Why was my transfer refused?

Common causes are a locked domain, a wrong authorization code, or a recent registration or contact change. Check these with your current registrar first.

How long does a DNS change take?

Often minutes, but it can take a day or longer to reach everyone. Lower TTL values before a planned change can help.

Will my email keep working if I change DNS?

Only if the MX and related records stay correct. Note your existing records before changing nameservers.

Can I register any extension?

Available extensions depend on our registration options and each registry's requirements. Search for your preferred extension to confirm availability and eligibility before ordering.
